La Diada de Sant Jordi forma part de l'imaginari col·lectiu de Catalunya i la seva celebració per part de la ciutadania es viu com una segona Diada Nacional. És una festa cívica extraordinàriament participativa que té al seu cor un ritual al voltant dels llibres i les roses.

REGALA VERSOS!
A més a més del totes les citacions literàries que oferim en l'apartat Regala versos!, el jove dissenyador David Ymbernon ens ha fet una postal per a que aquest Sant Jordi puguis felicitar-lo a les teves amistats amb versos de Joan Vinyoli, de qui enguany estem celebrant el centenari. UNA MICA D'HISTÒRIA
Diu la llegenda, que fa molts i molts anys, en algun lloc de l'actual Europa (les localitzacions varien segons la nacionalitat dels narradors), hi havia un regne que vivia atemorit per un drac malèfic.

Després de diverses vicissituds, més o menys sanguinolentes depenent també de les versions, la bèstia estava a punt de menjar-se una donzella (alguns diuen que era la princesa), quan de cop i volta va aparèixer un cavaller (Sant Jordi, és clar) que va matar el drac i de la sang del qual en va brollar un roser de roses vermelles...
El dia de Sant Jordi es commemora la mort del sant, el 23 de abril de 303, i la seva és una de les moltes llegendes sobre el mite de l'enfrontament desigual entre l'home i la bèstia irracional (el drac en aquest cas) que ha alimentat diverses llegendes i que, amb lleugers canvis i adaptacions, s'ha anat desplegant en l'imaginari de molts dels pobles d'Europa al llarg de la història.
UNA EFEMÈRIDE LITERÀRIA
El dia 23 d’abril és també la data en què van morir William Shakespeare, una de les figures més prestigioses de la literatura universal, i Josep Pla, figura referent de la literatura catalana de tots els temps. El dia abans moria Miguel de Cervantes.
Coincidint amb aquesta efemèride, i a partir de la celebració del dia de Sant Jordi a Catalunya, l'any 1996 la UNESCO va instaurar el dia 23 d'abril com a Dia Internacional del LLibre i, des de llavors, se celebra a tot el món amb l’objectiu de promoure la lectura.
UN DIA PER ALS ENAMORATS
Ja des de l’Antiguitat, la rosa és símbol universal de l’amor i de la bellesa. És una de les flors més celebrades pels poetes de tots els temps i ha sigut una constant a les mitologies i llegendes de moltes cultures del món.
És tradició a Catalunya que el dia 23 d’abril se celebri el dia dels enamorats, essent costum (des del segle XV) regalar una rosa vermella «com la sang» a l’estimada.
Inicialment va ser una festa vinculada a la noblesa. La popularització del fet de regalar roses vermelles a les estimades es va instituir activament el 1914. Aquest 2014 es fan 100 anys de la institucionalització d’aquesta tradició.
